Virtua Tennis 4 is a sports game in which players can play the role of a tennis player. The game focuses on quick matches rather than a realistic simulation. The main game mode is the career mode, where the player creates his own player. The goal is to reach the top within four seasons. The player has various opportunities to improve his skills, e.g. through training sessions (arcade mini games), buying new clothes for cash prizes or playing friendly matches.

In addition to the career mode, the game also features a single-match mode, a party mode and an arcade mode (where the goal is to win as many matches in a row as possible).
